Nigeria Sees 210,000 Increase in Electricity Consumers in Q1 2024, NBS Reports

The number of electricity consumers in Nigeria surged by 210,000, rising from 12.12 million in the fourth quarter of 2023 to 12.33 million in the first quarter of 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
In its Electricity Report for Q1 2024, released on Tuesday in Abuja, the NBS highlighted a 1.78 percent increase in electricity customers. The report, as covered by the News Agency of Nigeria, examines energy billing, revenue generation, and customer data across the Distribution Companies (DISCOS) for the reviewed period.
Year-on-year, electricity customers grew by 9.47 percent, from 11.27 million in Q1 2023 to 12.33 million in Q1 2024. Metered customers also saw a notable increase, reaching 5.91 million in Q1 2024, a 5.38 percent rise from 5.61 million in Q4 2023, and an 11.26 percent increase from 5.31 million in Q1 2023.
Similarly, the number of estimated electricity customers increased by 10.22 percent, from 5.83 million in Q4 2023 to 6.43 million in Q1 2024. Year-on-year estimated customers grew by 7.88 percent from 5.96 million in Q1 2023.
Revenue collection by electricity distribution companies totaled N291.62 billion in Q1 2024, slightly down from N294.95 billion in Q4 2023. However, this represented a 17.91 percent increase compared to the N247.33 billion collected in Q1 2023.
The report also noted that electricity supply decreased to 5,769 GWh in Q1 2024 from 6,432 GWh in Q4 2023. On a year-on-year basis, electricity supply dropped by 1.41 percent, compared to 5,851 GWh in Q1 2023.
This data underscores significant growth in Nigeria's electricity customer base while highlighting challenges in maintaining supply levels.
