World Bank and Nigerian Government Train 496 Youths in Digital Skills

The World Bank and the Nigerian federal government, in collaboration with IT firms, have successfully trained 496 young Nigerians—218 males and 278 females—in Web and Mobile App Development. This initiative is part of the World Bank Digital Skills Development Programme, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Education.
At the flag-off and business pitching ceremony held in Abuja, Project Leader Ololade Awe emphasized the crucial role of digital proficiency in today's rapidly evolving world. "Digital skills are not just an asset; they are essential for personal and professional success," she said, highlighting how the digital revolution has significantly transformed industries, economies, and societies.
Awe stressed the importance of equipping the Nigerian workforce with the necessary skills to navigate and lead in the digital age. “The World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Education are committed to fostering individual and societal development. This programme underscores the importance of digital literacy. Through comprehensive training in web and mobile app development, we aim to bridge the gap between current capabilities and future demands, fostering innovation and enhancing employability.”
National Project Coordinator Mrs. Blessing Ehi Ogwu, represented by IGF Consultant Prof. Ndem Ayara, noted the competitive selection process for the Innovation Grant Facility (IGF) project, with over 150 organizations applying. Ogwu explained that the IGF is part of the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) project, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education with assistance from the World Bank.
“The goal of the project is to provide digital skills to young Nigerians, especially women and persons with disabilities, to enhance their employability,” Ogwu stated.
This training initiative reflects a significant step towards equipping Nigerian youth with the digital skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world, ensuring they can contribute to and benefit from the digital economy.
